This position is one of three PhD positions of the project Transparent and explainable models that was funded by the WWTF.

The aim of this call is to develop tools for visual support of machine learning models, specifically deep neural networks and clustering algorithms.

Our focus is an interdisciplinary approach, together with collaborators from the research platform Data Science Uni Vienna.

Our research group, Visualization and Data Analysis, offers a pleasant work environment within a friendly, dynamic, international and young team.

Our group consists of a team of international researchers that is proud of its collegial atmosphere.

Active participation in research, teaching and administration. This involves

  • Developing and strengthening your independent research profile
  • Involvement in research projects / research studies
  • Sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18 month
  • International publications and presentations
  • Supervision of students (bachelor and master)
  • Participation in evaluation measures and quality assurance
  • Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration.
  • Help for the acquisition of project funds
  • The opportunity exists to help in teaching
  • Research foci : visual data analysis / data science, statistics and / or machine learning, HCI. Specifically, we want to develop visual analysis tools to better explore and understand deep neural netowrks as well as clustering algorithms.

    This is part of the grant by the WWTF on Transparent and explainable models of which this is one of three funded PhD positions.

  • Offer Requirements

    Skills / Qualifications

    A university or college degree (at least a Masters degree or equivalent with excellent grades) : a degree in computer science or similar Mathematics) although knowledge of computer science basics is a core requirement.

    In addition, we are looking for candidates with :

  • High ability to express yourself both orally and in writing
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Strong motivation to work in a team environment.
  • Strong motivation to publish in top refereed conferences / journals
  • Excitement for teaching and advising students
  • Perseverance, focus, integrity, ability to get things done In addition, the successful candidate should have
  • Teaching experience / experience of diverse didactic methods.
  • Experience of working on research projects
  • Publications in renowned, subject-relevant media (peer-reviewed, depending on the professional standards)
  • International presentation experience
  • Knowledge of university processes and structures
  • Experience abroad
  • Experience of supervising students
  • knowledge and interest in Machine Learning, HCI, usability, user-interface design
  • good programming skills (C++, Java, python, R, or Matlab, D3. WebGL)
  • good math skills.
