Responsibilities

In the framework of the Office of the Director-General / Executive Director, the intern shall undertake the following duties :

  • assist with background research of the global developments around gender equality and empowerment of women, with a particular focus on the UN system practices and policies;
  • assist with the work of internal and external communications for the Global Programme on Gender Equality and the empowerment of Women in UNOV / UNODC;
  • assist in supporting the Global Programme’s events from a communications perspective;
  • assist with background research on potential communications channels and identifying possible ways to enhance use or propose new ones;
  • perform other ad-hoc assignments subject to the requirements of service.
  • Communication :

  • identifies clients’ needs and matches them to appropriate solutions; monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems;
  • keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects; meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

  • Keeps abreast of available technology; understands applicability and limitation of technology to the work of the office;
  • actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks; shows willingness to learn new technology.

    Education

    To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements :

  • a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme in the field of gender studies, communications, journalism, public relations, social sciences, international relations or related field (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme in the field of gender studies, communications, journalism, public relations, social sciences, international relations or related field (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or

    c) have graduated with a university degree in the field of communications, journalism, public relations, social sciences, international relations or related field (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation (OFFICIAL PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY TO SUPPORT ONE OF THE ABOVE OPTIONS HAS TO BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION).

    Applicants are additionally required to :

  • Be computer literate in standard software applications, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Work Experience

    Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme, but are encouraged to list all relevant work experience in their application.

    Applicants must have a keen demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.

    Languages

    English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.

    Knowledge of - and fluency in - another official United Nations language, is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.

    United Nations Considerations

    Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
