Safety and Security in Industry Research Lab (#SafeSecLab)

Cyber-physical production systems (CPPS) need suitable networked architectures that take into account and combine safety (operation of the system must not pose any danger) and security (protection against unauthorized manipulation).

As part of the newly founded TÜV AUSTRIA SafeSecLab Research Lab for Safety and Security in Industry (#SafeSecLab) , several related research questions are addressed within the framework of dissertation projects (3 years funding) at TU Wien.

Model-Based Security & Safety Evaluation of OT Components

The digitization in industry opens up new possibilities, but also results in complex systems and increases their vulnerability.

In addition, security flaws have significantly more severe consequences, such as endangering people in and around the production site or manipulating the manufactured product with harmful consequences for the end customer.

The aim of this PhD project is to develop procedures for security and safety testing of operational technology components on the basis of engineering artifacts in particular their specification.

The testing methodology should be on existing models, i.e. on engineering artifacts covering plant descriptions and their assets using their system models (e.

g., SysML / UML), markup-based (e.g., AML), ontology-based (e.g., OWL) or code-based (e.g., IEC 61131-3 or high-level languages).

Given components should be testes proactively (isolated, but also in combination with other components) in an automated manner to determine if

  • requirements are met (w.r.t. secure protocols / configurations / authentication procedures, current patch level)
  • weak points can be identified (automated tests, analysis of critical points)
  • The results of the tests should be assessed both qualitatively and quantitatively with regard to their potential (economic) effects and their resulting risks (e.

    g., financial or in relation to operational safety). Furthermore, methods shall be investigated to automatically identify and evaluate countermeasures.

    Profile :

  • Academic master degree in computer science / informatics, electrical engineering or information technology
  • Interest in research in integrated approaches for safety and security
  • Excellent knowledge of English
  • Ability to work in a team, collaborate effectively with other PhDs, interest in interdisciplinary work
  • Additional project requirements :

    Knowledge in information technology with a focus on (distributed) automation engineering, industrial control systems, industrial communication systems, embedded systems, and safety & security.
